Forbes just released their annual 30 Under 30 feature, which spotlights “600 young innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders who are challenging the conventional wisdom and rewriting the rules for the next generation.” There are 30 honorees included in each of the 20 categories, and Mike Posner made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in the music category. Mike Posner, who just makes the list at 29, was recognized for penning hits for the likes of Justin Bieber, Avicii and Wiz Khalifa — not to mention his own mega-successful “I Took a Pill in Ibiza.”
Forbes Releases 2018 Edition of the 30 Under 30 List
Forbes released the seventh annual “30 Under 30” list (p. 90 of the December 12, 2017 issue of Forbes magazine), featuring 600 young innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders who are challenging the conventional wisdom and rewriting the rules for the next generation. The Forbes class of 2018 30 Under 30 list, presented by Jaguar, includes 30 honorees for each of the 20 categories. All under 30 years old, the honorees were vetted by a panel of blue-ribbon judges in their respective fields. Over the past seven years, Forbes has grown a 30 Under 30 alumni network of over 4,000 people worldwide. The names within this network exemplify Forbes’ impressive track record of spotlighting young game changers and industry leaders who were on the cusp of achieving still greater fame and fortune. There is one 30 under 30 alumni judge in each category. Nineteen percent of 30 under 30 list members are immigrants, originating from more than 50 different countries. Thirty-eight percent of these list members live and work on the East Coast and thirty-five percent on the West Coast.
“For the past seven years, the Forbes 30 Under 30 list has emerged as the way that the world discovers the next generation of entrepreneurs and game-changers,” said Randall Lane, Editor of Forbes Magazine and creator of the Forbes Under 30 franchise. “This is the ultimate club: the people that will reinvent every field over the next century.”
30 Under 30 Music: The Class Of 2018
Our list highlights best and brightest singers, songwriters, rappers, DJs, agents, managers and entrepreneurs in the business. The only requirement, aside from receiving the most votes from our judges, is that candidates must be under age 30 as of December 31, 2017, and must not have appeared on a previous 30 Under 30. This year’s honorees hail from genres ranging from hip-hop to country to contemporary Christian, and vary in age from 17-year-old opera sensation Jackie Evancho to 29-year-old pop maestro Mike Posner.
“There is more than what meets the eye with Mike Posner,” says Skylar Grey (a fellow 30 Under 30 alum). “Although he’s had a big career as an artist, his songwriting abilities have made him responsible for many other artists’ hits. With all he’s accomplished by age 29, this is like the ‘lifetime achievement’ award of 30 Under 30.”
Though Posner’s best-known hit, “I Took A Pill In Ibiza,” feels more like pop–or even country–than hip-hop, he got his start working with some of the biggest rappers on the planet, from Lil Wayne to Big Sean. That’s a good place to be these days: According to Nielsen, R&B/Hip-Hop is now the most popular genre in America, accounting for more than a quarter of total music consumption. Much of that boom has come from the names on our list.
