Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point. Its elevation of 8,848.86 m (29,031.7 ft) was most recently established in 2020 by the Nepali and Chinese authorities.

Mike Posner Climbs Mt. Everest for Detroit Justice Center

Mike Posner

My name is Mike Posner, I’m from Detroit, MI and I’m a Grammy nominated singer-songwriter.

After my dad passed away, I felt stuck under the weight of my own life. In 2019, I walked across America in order to find out who I was when I wasn’t “Mike Posner, Grammy nominated singer-songwriter.”

The journey changed my life and when I crossed the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, I decided what I wanted to do next…

Climb Mount Everest.

Two weeks after I finished walking, I began training with my Coach, Dr. Jon Kedrowski.

While the Walk Across America was about myself, I want my climb to be about others. My father, rest his soul, was a criminal defense attorney in Detroit for 40 years before he died.

That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate my climb to raising funds for the Detroit Justice Center – the only organization of its kind doing criminal justice reform work that would make my dad beam with joy – and it’s led by Black women.

I couldn’t be more honored and humbled to support them. I need your help. Please donate whatever you feel called to do. If you aren’t in a position to donate, please post or share this link https://www.gofundme.com/everest. I thank you. I love you. Keep Going.

About Detroit Justice Center:

The Detroit Justice Center works alongside communities to create economic opportunities, transform the justice system, and promote equitable and just cities. DJC is founded on the belief that we cannot build cities that work for everyone without remedying the impacts of mass incarceration. This mission requires innovative ways of community lawyering—rooted in defensive and offensive fights for racial justice and economic equity—that build up our poorest residents through direct services and novel approaches to land use, housing, and employment.

Mike Posner has gotten very used to going on walkabout. The “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” rapper, who spent much of 2019 walking across the continental U.S. and was briefly interrupted by a rattlesnake bite, announced his latest adventure on Monday (March 29). The Detroit native said he plans to climb Mt. Everest in May to raise funds for his hometown’s Detroit Justice Center.

“While my walk across America was about me finding myself, I want my climb to be about others,” Posner said in a statement. “Before my dad died, he was a criminal defense attorney in Detroit for 40 years. I’ve decided to dedicate my climb to the non-profit Detroit Justice Center because they’re doing criminal justice reform work in my city that would make my dad beam with joy.”

The trek up the world’s highest mountain (which rises to 29,000 feet) will come after Posner spent 18 months doing intensive high altitude training in Colorado, scaling more than 40 peaks, according to a release announcing the effort, for which the MC has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the Detroit Justice Center. Speaking to CBS This Morning on Monday, Posner said he was well aware of the possible danger of his undertaking.

“They brought me to tears more than once, but if you push too hard in mountains you die,” he said of the potential pitfalls of ascending the mountain where winds can top 100 m.p.h., and which has become so overcrowded in recent years that even experienced climbers have perished. “One thing I’ve learned is that a lot of life, a lot of beauty, is on the other side of that feeling of anxiety, or fear, or whatever you want to call it,” Posner told CBS This Morning about any trepidation he has about the adventure.

The plan is to leave for Kathmandu, Nepal, this week and complete the climb within several months. Posner’s latest single, the bouncy “Momma Always Told Me” featuring Stanaj and Yung Bae, was released earlier this year. His 2010 song “Please Don’t Go” got an unexpected bump recently when it became part of the TikTok #PleaseDontGoChallenge.
