Last year, 23-year-old Mike Posner rose from obscurity to fame with his hit “Cooler Than Me.” Though his face may not yet be familiar to a mainstream audience, the song has made the hip-hop artist instantly recognizable across the globe.
On November 20, Posner passes on some of the lessons he’s learned to the contestants of Majors & Minors, the Hub’s new singing competition where — gasp — no one gets voted off. Instead, the 12 kids ages 10 to 16 get to be mentored by recording artists such as Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, and Adam Lambert. Lucky kids!
Wetpaint Entertainment got the scoop on Posner’s guest appearance, and which one of his songs he’d want Glee to cover!
Wetpaint Entertainment: Why did you want to be a mentor on Majors & Minors?
Mike Posner: I was blessed to have a lot of people around me as I came up in the music game that mentored me. I feel it’s now my turn to mentor others when given the opportunity.
What surprised you about the contestants and the competition?
How talented those kids were at such a young age. They sang “Cooler Than Me” for me and added all these incredible harmonies that aren’t in the song. It sounded amazing.
What sets Majors & Minors apart from X Factor, Idol, etc.?
Majors & Minors deals exclusively with young people and you are only helping them, never shattering their dreams.
Which singing competition show, other than M&M, do you think is the best on TV right now?
I actually don’t own a TV, believe it or not.
Do you feel like any of these shows realistic are in setting up careers in the music industry?
I think so. You just have to look at some of the people that have leveraged them into real careers.
What do you think of Simon Cowell and LA Reid?
Both are amazing music executives and businessmen. I’ve never met Simon Cowell, but on a personal level LA Reid is really nice.
If you could pick one of your songs to be performed on Glee, which one would it be and why?
“Drug Dealer Girl.” (Laughs)
