A Duke basketball coach and a famous musician are part of a fundraising concert this weekend for Durham mayoral candidate Pierce Freelon. The campaign for Freelon, who leads the hip-hop jazz group The Beast, is presenting a Mike Posner concert at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Living Arts Collective in Durham, NC.
Singer Posner is known for songs like “Cooler Than Me,” “I Took A Pill in Ibiza” and “Bow Chicka Wow Wow” featuring Lil Wayne. He is a 2009 graduate of Duke University. Posner performed at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro in April.
Smith is a former Duke basketball player who was on the 2010 national championship team and played two seasons in the NBA. He joined Duke’s coaching staff in 2016 as a special assistant coach.
Tickets for the private party fundraiser for Freelon range from $10 for students to $500 and are classified as campaign contributions. Posner donated $5,200 to Freelon’s campaign in the latest finance report. Smith has not donated to Freelon’s campaign according to finance reports through August.
Freelon is running for mayor against Farad Ali, Steve Schewel, Shea Ramirez, Sylvester Williams and Tracy Drinker. Durham’s nonpartisan municipal primary is on Oct. 10. The top two vote-getters move on to the municipal general election on Nov. 7.
