Mike Posner says he’s finally stopped worrying about being popular, focusing instead on being good at what he does.

Fortunately for the American muso, he’s delivering on both with his current hit, “I Took A Pill In Ibiza.”

He’s also had huge global success with hits “Cooler Than Me” and “Please Don’t Go.”

“I believe that if you make something really good it will find a way to the world,” Posner told Confidential in Sydney yesterday, promoting new single “Be As You Are” from his album At Night, Alone.

“I always say, don’t worry about being popular, worry about being good because being popular is a byproduct of being good.”

Posner, 28, is as renowned for writing hits for others as he is for his own chart toppers.

He’s penned tracks for the likes of Maroon 5 (Sugar), Justin Bieber (Boyfriend) and Labrinth (Beneath Your Beautiful).

“It is flattering when people you admire as a fan like your stuff enough to make it theirs,” he said.

I am really blessed, and it wasn’t always like this, to be in a spot where I need not work with any artist that I don’t absolutely love. These are guys that I love. Labrinth is my favourite male artist in the world, there’s a pain in his voice and it seems like it came from past lives almost. It just hits me. So I am really lucky.”

As well as music, Posner will soon release a book of poetry titled Teardrops and Balloons.

“It is explicitly not songs,” he said of his poetry. “People want to hear songs more than they want to hear poems from me so if they were songs, I would make them songs. Sometimes just the thing in my head at night is not a melody, it is a poem. It doesn’t rhyme, it doesn’t go on beat, it doesn’t fit in 16 bars, it is something else. I have been writing poems for years and I never knew what to do with them until this..”
