17 Years of One Foot Out The Door: From Duke Dorm Rooms to Global Stardom
On October 28, 2009—seventeen years ago today—Mike Posner dropped his seminal second mixtape, One Foot Out The Door. Serving as the perfect bridge between his college dorm room roots and global stardom, this project remains a masterclass in genre-bending ambition and creative hustle.
Recorded during his final semester at Duke University, One Foot Out The Door delivered a 12-track soundtrack that blurred the lines between hip-hop, indie, electro, and pop. Hosted by DJ royalty Clinton Sparks and DJ Benzi, the project featured an incredible roster of emerging legends and heavy hitters, including Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Bun B, 3OH!3, Freddie Gibbs, Saigon, GLC, and XV.
Beyond the music, One Foot Out The Door was a true multimedia rollout ahead of its time. Accompanied by a 12-episode YouTube web series sponsored by Puma, fans received an unfiltered, behind-the-scenes look at a student-artist balancing midterms, studio sessions, and the verge of signing a major record deal.
From iconic anthems like the Gigamesh remix of “Cooler Than Me” and “Speed of Sound” (feat. Big Sean) to introspective favorites like “I Don’t Trust Myself,” the mixtape captured an artist standing right on the edge of the rest of his life—with “one foot out the door”.
Today, the project remains a cornerstone of Mike’s journey and is available to stream across all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and Tidal.
